This wasn’t the intended next blog, but circumstances have meant it is.
There is a commonly known quote in portrait photography that the photographer should fall in love with your subjects. It basically means, for showing a compelling view of the subjects, a photographer needs to build a connection with them.
During the past week, my grandmother-in-law[Luisa] passed away and one of my photos of her was used at the wake and the funeral.
I had a connection to Luisa through getting to know her as the grandmother of my wife and through the connection built in the multiple photo sessions I took with her.
She was a strong female in a misogynistic society, I tried to incorporate that into portraits of her, yet also showing the softer side of her personality.
When taking photos of females, I prefer to show them in a positive way and avoiding the hyper masculine view of women as objects. I approach male portraiture in the same manner, avoiding the negative stereotypes of masculinity.
I generally disagree with photos during a funeral. It is very easy to over step boundaries in these types of events.
I did however take one photo, which I felt captures the final time I photographed this inspirational person respectfully.
It was a pleasure to know and photograph her on numerous occasions.
